Landscape Art | Original Art by Veny

The term Landscape Art includes natural scenery where rivers, trees, valleys, mountains and complete views and panoramas are depicted. They can be backgrounds for figures or can be a work on their own. Weather, cloud formations and skies are traditionally included in landscape art. Landscapes that are detailed as the subject can show majestic mountain ranges, deep forests or even deserts.

From the beginnings of art, people included the earliest forms of landscape painting in their drawings. They were nothing more than just lines that depicted the separation between the ground and the sky. Landscapes that first featured only the terrain and no figures were the frescos of Minoan Greece. There were also Ancient Egyptian depictions of landscapes, but they mostly featured a figure, plant or object.

The Chinese art form known as shan shui translates to pure landscape and utilizes ink to paint landscapes. The Ancient Romans were also known to paint frescos for rooms that would be of landscapes. Some of those still exist at Pompeii. China however is given the most credit for the contribution of the art form. The tradition of shan shui were paintings that were of landscapes with no other purpose than to show beauty or tell a story. They were not created with the purpose of being used to depict actual landmarks.

Many of the early landscapes were created from the imagination of the artist with hints of similarities to actual places. Japan modified the Chinese style and used the landscape in more intricate and encompassing ways. Their works would depict cast landscapes painted on very large scrolls. Their artists used bright colors for their hanging scrolls and folding screens.

Several different techniques have been used through the ages to create these works of art. The first Western landscape that is noted was from 1444 by the artist Konrad Witz who featured Lake Geneva to the peak of Le Mole in the painting entitled The Miraculous Draught of Fishes. Another artist, Durer, created intricate and realistic and invented landscapes.

Landscapes describe earth based terrains and there have been other terms to describe other forms of depictions. Those are riverscapes, aerial landscapes, moonscapes, cloudscapes, inscapes, hardscapes and the Italian Vedute which are often cityscapes.

Luminism which is an American style of painting landscapes was predominant in the years between 1850 and 1870. The paintings where distinct with the use of lighting and aerial views as well as the clever masking of visible brushstrokes. The paintings were of reflective water, hazy skies, and were painted with the purpose of bringing calm and tranquility to the viewer. The style was similar to impressionism in the use of lighting but that is where the similarities ended.

Veny's styles will vary depending on her feeling and the landscape that she is creating for her original acrylic paintings on canvas. Each one has a beauty and meaning of its own. They are wonderful as a collection and equally so as single pieces of art. Her dedication to her craft can be seen in her landscape art Country Tuscany.
