In the first century, the fresco located at the Roman Baths of Trajan, depicts a top down view of the ancient city.
During the Middle Ages, several cityscapes were used as backdrops for portraits and also used in biblical themed
paintings. Copperplate etchings and prints were created in the 16th, and all the way to the 18th, centuries that
showed different cities in the same manner. These were used as maps.
Midway in the 17th century, cityscapes became an independent art form in the Netherlands. Jan Vermeer's painting;
View of Delft is a perfect example of an accurate portrayal of a city. Other popular city subjects were Haarlem,
The Hague and Amsterdam. The 18th century saw it's most abundant move to cityscapes in Venice.

The popularity of cityscapes began to decline into the 20th century as more painters flocked to conceptual and
abstract art. However, the American painter, Hopper, stayed true to figurative painting and painted cityscapes
of the American dream and reality. Some of the better known cityscape artists are Jacquette, Downes and Estes.
The 21st century has seen a revamping and reawakening. Stephen Wiltshire is an artist of notoriety in this art form.
He is well known for his cityscape panoramas that he creates from memory.

you want to go to. They are a wonderful reminder of the power and artistry of humanity in their ability
to mold their surroundings with architecture and beauty. A cityscape painting is much more than the recreation
of the actual visual imagery of the city. They can bring back memories of experiences and fuel the imagination
and desire for travel to faraway places.
Many cityscapes are of skylines of cities while others have a more in depth look into the center of the city.
