Dreams are as commonplace as they are mysterious. On one hand, everyone, including animals, experience them. On the other, few, if at all,
truly understand what they truly are, let alone what they mean.
In spite of this grand mystery, or perhaps, precisely because of it, humans have long been awestruck with dreams. What is fascinating
about dreams is their incompatibility with reality, their ability to twist, stretch, and distort the world as we know it. One could say that
it is a private location built around the idea of the public world, and the sole key that unlocks it is sleep.
Once one enters the world of the dream, the hard facts of our existence in the real universe may be true no longer: the rules of logic,
the universal laws of motion, the normal flow of time, among others. In the dream world, we become protagonists who are caught
(and sometimes are able to control) a narrative that involves, directly or obliquely, elements from our daily existence.

Sometimes we are able to perform feats that are impossible in real life without the aid of machines: we fly, we swim in fire, we
breathe underwater, our limbs extend indefinitely or are able to move in humanly impossible speeds. And it is not only us people who
are affected by this baffling kind of dream logic. Even geography is skewed, and the places we know by heart in our waking life may
suddenly be wrong, jumbled, and unfamiliar. The door in our kitchen may suddenly open to a medieval castle, a prehistoric cave, or a
futuristic space lab filled with unrecognizable creatures.
This marriage of the irrational with the rational, the true and the false, the real and the imaginary has prompted many to wonder
about why we have dreams and what they mean.
Some argue that dreams, because they are ultimately about our quotidian concerns, help us solve the problems we have in real life.
According to them, the images we see in dreams are symbols that when analyzed, would point to deep-seated desires or fears of which
we may not even be conscious. Analyzing them, therefore, could lead to insights that would address what issues we may have with ourselves,
our childhood, or the people around us. Others say that dreams play a great role in organizing the information we receive when we are awake
into coherent memories, which we can thereafter recall at ease. Still there are some who believe that dreams have no meaning, that they are
simply random images caused by electric impulses shooting through our brain. The images these stimuli cause are culled from our experiences
fed to us during sleep by our mind, and thus, should not be interpreted because they truly mean nothing.
Regardless of their purpose and meaning, however, dreams provoke thought, imagination, inspiration, and creative impulses. They have given
rise to perhaps the best ideas ever proposed by our species, and no doubt to some of the most astounding
works of art in the various fields. Whether we understand them or not, therefore, is of no moment,
because they are functional even without being completely understood. In the end, perhaps this is truly the essence of these beautiful yet
baffling parades of imagery.
