Acrylic Paint | Original Acrylic Art by Veny

Acrylic paints are a paint that has pigment suspended in a polymer emulsion and is very fast drying. Acrylics are resistant to water when they are dried, but can they can be diluted with water while working with them. They can be modified with pastes or gels or diluted in water to appear as an oil painting or watercolor. They can also be modified to have characteristics that are only obtainable with acrylic paints.

They were originally introduced in 1950 and were called Magna. They were first offered by the company Bocour Artist Colors. The acrylics that were water based were sold for use in home and were referred to as latex even though they contained nothing resembling latex. The paints for the interiors of home were a combo of other materials, pigment, water and filler. Artists were interested and began exploring new combinations for acrylics to create new mediums. Liquitex offered the acrylic paints that are most similar to the paints of today and became available for purchase in the '60s.

Acrylic art paints can be thinned down and utilized as a watercolor but once they are dried they can no longer be moved. Using this technique does not allow the use of erasers as with actual water colors. There are acrylic paints that come in matte and gloss finish and a semi-matte which is the most widely used.

Additional agents can be mixed with the paint to change the texture and finish. Mediums are mixed and varnishes can also be used. Once an acrylic paint has dried it can no longer be moved from the surface. Mild solvents or waters do not change the acrylic, but alcohol can alter it if it is still newly painted. Solvents will completely destroy an acrylic.

In priming a canvas, only an acrylic gesso that is artist grade should be used. It is mandatory to not add anything with the gesso when it is being applied. If an acrylic has been mixed with more than thirty percent water it will no longer be able to form a solid substance. There are some substances that can be used to modify the drying time of the paint so that it can be worked with longer.

Painters that use acrylics can change the way that the acrylic looks and responds in flexibility, hardness and texture. Acrylics are able to bond to a number of different media and surfaces but are predominantly used with canvas or paper.

Acrylic and oils differ in that oil paints are oil based and acrylics are water based. Though the big difference between the two is that acrylic dries much faster than oil paint. Acrylic can generally dry in around thirty minutes where it can take oil up to or more than twenty-four hours to dry. Oils have more colors than acrylics because acrylics can not hold every pigment due to chemical restrictions however; there are fluorescent acrylics but none for oils. It also appears that acrylics may be more durable than oil paints.
